Culture Availability

Cultures are available for qualified researchers. As most of the strains are unpublished or still under investigation, the distribution of cultures is regulated in order to avoid conflicts between ongoing research projects.

Culture Requests

Researchers may request strains (5 or fewer) from the Curator of the CCMEE in a letter or via e-mail. The letter should be accompanied by a concise description of the research project spelling out the question or problem the research aims to solve and describing how the requested culture will help answer the question. This will insure that the same or similar cultures will not be issued to other researchers for the same purpose as long as the recipient is actively working on the problem. Researchers are encouraged to contact Dr. Richard Castenholz (rcasten@darkwing.uoregon.edu) before formally requesting a strain to discuss the research question for which the cultures are needed.

Use of Cultures

Recipients of cultures accept the responsibility to use the cultures only for the purpose described in the request, not to pass on cultures to a third person, and to destroy all unused material at the termination of the project unless a written release is obtained from Dr. Castenholz. In order to insure that the cultures are not "tied down" unduly to any researcher, recipients of cultures are requested to submit a short yearly report about progress in use of the culture(s). Generally it is expected that within two years results would be published or near publication.

Culture Prices

Cultures are $30 for nonprofit organizations and $100 for all others.

Publications

Refer to strains with the culture name, collection acronym, and culture number (e.g. U-Sara-L CCMEE 5190) in all publications.
